San Diego explore, eat & stay |

Balboa Park - San Diego’s version of central park, but actually bigger. The massive park has so much to offer. Food truck's scents wafting from every direction, I decided to go for a walk to soak up the sunshine. There are over 17 museums to keep you occupied and giant checkers to play. Also a huge variety of gardens to choose from I picked out a few to fill my afternoon. The botanical gardens are breath taking, photos don’t do it justice. (Pictured above) Outside find a lily pad pound and inside the sun beams through as you wander the beautiful agriculture, my favourite part the touch and scent garden.

The desert garden was also a favourite, minding my butt from cacti, it felt as if I were in a whole different world. Prickles with flowers blossoming a true beauty. Even more astounding this garden was developed in 1935.

Spanish Art Village - Colourful pathway lead you to various artists, super talented with shops and studios for you to explore.

California Tower - Historic architecture built in 1915, closed for over 80 years, the tower was recently reopened so now you can climb to the top of this master piece.

The zoo is rated #1 in the world, but unfortunately time was ticking so I didn’t get to experience it for myself. (Another excuse to come back to San Diego.)

La Jolla, a beautiful rocky seaside community about 20 minutes from San Diego, I went on July 4th weekend so you can imagine how busy this paradise was. Lengths of beaches with kayaking, surfing, smoking, you name it. A must visit if you love the ocean.

Sunny Jim Sea Cave - A hidden gem. Enter the cave and wooden stairs from inside the cave store on Coast Blvd, with a $5 entry fee, worth every cent. These magical views discovered by Frank Baum, the author of the wizard of Oz.

Scipps Pier - Adventure here it’s right across from California’s institute of Oceanography.

Swing into summer by finding the not so touristy secret Swings - Explore along Coast Walk, you will get to a bridge that will be bannered off, be fierce it's totally safe, cross over then directly to your left go down the steep rocky path way and TADA, you made it. You can also hold onto different ropes and go vertically down to the ocean.

La Jolla Cove - Swim and sunbathe or even better watch sea lions and seals do it with you! Get up close and personal, but be very careful because the rocks are super slippery, I got a little too excited and have a few bloody battle wounds from slipping….totally worth the picture right?! Explore caves and find other wildlife in the tide pools at low tide. I could honestly spend days here wandering the various tracks, pathways and viewpoints.

The Gaslamp Quarter offers everything historical buildings filled with nightlife, entertainment and amazing food of all cruising.  Since you are so close to the Mexican boarder I recommend Mexican food.

Try out Taste and Thirst, for amazing happy hour deals everyday of the week. I went for a chicken quesadilla, which was big enough to take some home for a midnight snack.

Lolita’s was a favourite, I got the Carne Fries with a mixture of cheese topped with spiced meat loaded with guac and sour cream, they were unbelievable so much flavour and again portion size was huge.

Of course there is also Chipotle, a new favourite of mine.

Hostel on 3rd. Not so well known but a boutique style hostel. The location is perfect close to a massive mall, public transport and the Gaslamp district, amazing food and nightlife.
